Chapter 5: Living in the Heart

Live in the heart, not saying the secret,
Speak nectar-soaked words.
If others become fire, O avadhut, you become water.

Gorakh says: Listen avadhut, live in the world in this way:
Eyes see, ears listen, mouth says nothing.

Nath says: Stay centered in the soul, don’t insist on debate.
This world is a garden of thorns, place each step with care.

Balanced posture, balanced food, balanced sleep,
Gorakh says: Listen sons, such a man neither dies nor grows old.

One who eats, dies, and one who doesn’t eat, dies.
Gorakh says: O sons, only the sanyami, the balanced one, transcends.

Always reside in the middle.
Mind unmoving, breath becomes still.

As long as truth is hidden
The stories will never stop.
As long as forbidden places exist,
The stories will never stop.
O people of the mind, you are the empowered ones,
Continue to build your prisons,
But the very walls will dance, the mad lovers will never be contained.
This tulip and rose, moon and stars -
May even scratch your face, O priest!
These taverns do not close, the taverns will never close.
Moths themselves become candles of trust
Burning themselves up, laughing, smiling.
The moths will never be captives
In the dark houses of superstition,
This mocking and rebuke are nothing,
There is nothing else except words of love.
This world is a garden path,
Its stories will never stop.

As long as the divine is hidden, the people longing to uncover it will continue to be born.

As long as truth is hidden,
The stories will never stop.

As long as there is a veil on the face of the beloved there will be talk of the divine, and songs of prayer will arise.

As long as truth is hidden
The stories will never stop.
As long as forbidden places exist,
The stories will never stop.

The tales of the search for the divine will continue as long as the divine has not been found. But the search for the divine is an individual search and only the individual finds it. The search of the one who finds it is ended. But the search of the many others who are straying in the dark will continue.

Religion will remain on the earth as long as a single man is still asleep, as long as all have not awakened, as long as the lamps of all have not been lit.
