Chapter 5: Living in the Heart

O people of the mind, you are the empowered ones,
Continue to build your prisons(

Oh intellectuals! Oh pundits! Oh people of the mind! Those who place trust in intellect, in logic.

O people of the mind, you are the empowered ones,
Continue to build your prisons(

Go on building walls of scripture, go on erecting prisons of words, go on casting chains of theoretical systems.

O people of the mind, you are the empowered ones,
Continue to build your prisons,
But the very walls will dance, the mad lovers will never be contained.

Those who have heard the call of the divine will start dancing even within your walls and the walls of the prison will start dancing with them too. No matter how many theoretical systems you make you won’t be able to eradicate the mad lovers from this world. No theory gives contentment. Theoretical systems remain superficial, one’s being does not receive any juice from them. Doctrines remain echoing in the head, but the being is untouched by them.

O people of the mind, you are the empowered ones,
Continue to build your prisons,
But the very walls will dance, the mad lovers will never be contained.

Many systems of jails have been erected - Hinduism, Mohammedanism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism - they are all prisons. Factories to cast chains have been built for you and you call them temples. Your slavery is being cast in the mosques. But the beloveds of the divine will still raise a dance in the midst of all these chains. Even their chains can create the jingling sound of ankle-bells for them. If you can dance then even chains become ankle-bells; if you don’t know how to dance then even ankle-bells are chains. If you know how to dance then even a prison is a place to dance; if you don’t know dancing, what will you do sitting in a disco? If you know how to drink, then whatever you drink is wine. And if you don’t know how to drink, then even if a stream of nectar is raining down what will you do with it?

This tulip and rose, moon and stars -
May even scratch your face, O priest!
