Chapter 7: The Shine of Countless Suns

Said the master to Daya:
Take the vow of the tortoise,
Withdraw your senses,
And bring awareness to your breath.

Without utterance, with no beads in your hands,
Remembrance continues within.
Only a rare person experiences this,
It is the grace of the master, says Daya.

When the disciple chants the unchantable mantra,
Keeping awareness in his lotus-heart,
Pure knowledge manifests there,
Removing all stains of darkness.

Where there is no death and no blaze,
No cold and no heat, O my brother,
Seeing my home, my ultimate abode,
The unfathomable mystery of life is revealed, says Daya.

Seeing the peerless beauty of the beloved,
The light of ten million suns shines.
All of life’s sorrows are erased,
And the essence of happiness is manifest, says Daya.

The shine of countless suns,
The miraculous light manifests,
It feels dazzling,
But the mind becomes cool and refreshed.

There is much light without lightning,
And it is showering without clouds.
Watching this ceaselessly
My heart is delighted, says Daya.

The world is a falsehood,
A deceptive well in the form of the body.
You are consciousness,
The abode of a marvelous bliss.

This person hurt me, that person hurt me,
But I have found no one
Who could soothe my aching heart.
The lamps have died from having no oil of affection,
Their wicks lie unlit.
The light-fairy is confined
To the desolate prisonhouse of the black night.
Darkness rules in every household,
No ray of light smiles anywhere.
From where will the fire of oblation kindle?
Who will adorn me with the crown of light?
Who will offer luminous circumambulations
And turn my no-moon night into a full moon one?

The one who turns your no-moon night into a full-moon night is the master. The one who fills your darkness with light is the master. The one who gives you the clues to your true identity is the master.

In today’s sutras, Daya talks about the grace of her master and what has happened to her because of his grace. These aphorisms are unique, because they are the essence of meditation. If you can understand them, an abundance of light will shine in your life as well. If you can understand them, you too can be immersed in the ultimate bliss. As Daya says:

There is much light without lightning,
And it is showering without clouds.
Watching this ceaselessly
My heart is delighted, says Daya.
