Chapter 4: A Pure Flame of Love

So there are two things in love. Devotion is a part of love and so is the world. The impurity in love is the world, and the pure devotion hidden in that love is the divine. So a discerning person will seek out the divine in love, and a fool will descend into the world. Love is a ladder: the world is below, the divine is above. If you go on purifying love you will move towards the divine; if you go on polluting it, you will descend into the world. Love becomes nothing more than a dream when it gets too polluted, love becomes the truth when its purity shines out.

Godliness is hidden in love - release it. And in love you have had glimpses of godliness many times, but you didn’t know how to free it. Make your love more like a prayer and less of a physical passion. Don’t demand in love, give. Don’t be a beggar in love, become an emperor. Share in love, don’t hoard. Gradually you will begin to discover that the impurities in your love are melting away. And as these impurities melt, a pure flame of light begins to manifest. This flame is called devotion.

I cannot forget your remembrance,
It is as if someone is forever pinching at my heart.

Every love pinches because it is nothing but a remembrance of the divine. A dim remembrance - very dim, buried under many layers - but it is a remembrance of the divine all the same. That is why you become mad when you fall in love - just a little mad, but mad nevertheless.

No face resembles yours,
I keep wandering this world, carrying your picture.

And that is why although every love gives you the promise of contentment, it never delivers it. When you fall in love with someone, in the beginning the beauty of that love is unsurpassed. But soon the ashes settle. Love rusts very quickly. Soon strife, conflict and turmoil begin. No one knows what has happened to those heights of love. Soon every love turns into a conflict. But in those first moments, when your eyes were fresh and everything was new, you had a glimpse - otherwise how could you have fallen in love? Someone had called out to you, something had thrown out the challenge to your being. Whose challenge was it? Whose glimpse was it? You felt as if you had found the ultimate. You felt as if you had found that which you have been searching for; the lover that you have been looking for!

But soon everything is lost again. The smoke of physical passion, the self-seeking, all the pettinesses of life, the anger, the dirt.all these soon take you over. Soon you begin to drown again. For a brief moment you rose up from under the water and saw the sky - but this proved to be very momentary. It was only the wedding night. You start drowning again.Whenever you have experienced this nectar in love, it is because.

No face resembles yours,
I keep wandering this world, carrying your picture.
