My beloved ones,

The state of man’s mind is like a disturbed hive of honeybees: thoughts and thoughts and thoughts buzz round and round. Surrounded by these thoughts, man lives in anxiety, tension and worry. To recognize and to know life, mind needs to be silent like a lake in which there are no ripples. To be acquainted with life, mind needs to be clear like a mirror on which there is no dust.

You have a mind like a hive of honeybees: it is neither a mirror nor a silent lake. If you think that you will be able to know something with such a mind, that you will be able to attain to something or that you will be able to become something, you are making a great mistake. It is absolutely necessary to become free from this constant flow of thoughts.

To have thoughts and thoughts and thoughts buzzing around is not a sign of health, it is the sign of a sick mind. When one’s mind is totally pure and clean, when it is healthy, then thoughts disappear. Consciousness remains but thoughts disappear. When mind is sick and unhealthy, then consciousness disappears and only a crowd of thoughts remains. You live in that crowd of thoughts. From morning until evening, from evening until morning, from birth until death, you live in a crowd of thoughts.

How can you get free of this crowd of thoughts? I said a few things about this in the morning, and some questions have been asked in connection with what I said. I will now answer those questions.

The first thing is that becoming free of thoughts is the second step: the first step is not to create a crowd of thoughts in the first place. If you go on collecting thoughts on the one hand and try to become free of thoughts on the other hand, how will you manage? If you want to get rid of the leaves of a tree and you go on giving water to the roots of the tree, then how will you be able to get rid of the leaves of the tree? Watering the roots, you don’t seem to realize that there is a relationship between the roots and the leaves – a deep relationship. The roots and leaves seem to be separate, but the leaves are not separate from the roots and the water which is given to the roots reaches all the way up to the leaves.

So you collect many thoughts and water their roots, and then when these thoughts leave the mind feeling very uneasy and disturbed, you want to find a way to silence them. But to stop the tree from growing leaves you have to stop giving water to its roots. You should understand how you water the roots of your thoughts. If you come to understand this, you can stop it. Then it will not be long before the leaves wither away.

How do you water your thoughts?
