First, it will be good to understand a few things about the divine. The divine is a synthesis of all opposites. Everything in this world exists along with its opposite, this is the way nature exists. Nature cannot exist without opposites. If there is no night there will be no day; if there is no woman there will be no man; if there is no death there will be no birth; if there is no unhappiness there will be no happiness. The whole of life is manifested in the interrelatedness of opposites.
This is why life is a duality, a friction. Here, anything that happens will happen only with the support of the opposite. Here, when you make a friend you have begun to make an enemy. Here, you begin to love and immediately hate also begins. You cannot do anything here without simultaneously creating a balance of the opposite.
Buddha has said, “I do not make friends because I do not want to make enemies.” He has said, “I do not love because I do not want to hate.”
Life is both matter and consciousness. Consciousness is the opposite of matter. Eastern philosophers have always accepted this duality, hence they have supported the duality of this world. In the West the new scientific research also accepts this duality: now their concept is also that whether we know it or not, the opposite always exists.
Science has made a unique discovery, the discovery of anti-matter. They say that if there is matter there must also be anti-matter. Up to now anti-matter has not yet been identified, but since everything exists along with its opposite, there must also be anti-matter.
Because there is time, something like anti-time must also exist. Time moves forwards, so anti-time will move backwards. Here a child is born, then he becomes young and then becomes old. If there is something like anti-time, then first there will be an old man, then a youth and then a child – the reverse journey. And this is not said by any philosopher but by modern physicists. There has to be a flow of anti-time alongside the flow of time because time cannot exist without its opposite. Nothing can exist without its opposite.
You see a stone which is solid matter. Science says that just as a stone is solid matter occupying space, there must be holes in space which are the opposite of matter. So far it has not been possible to prove the existence of these holes, but a thesis based on this principle has been awarded a Nobel Prize. There must be holes in space. It is difficult to imagine what the purpose of these holes could be. Space is a fullness, a filling, but parallel to this there should also be empty holes, a void.
Mahavira made similar statements two thousand five hundred years ago. He said, “There is the world, and opposite to it there is also the non-world.” The manifest world is matter and opposite to it is the unmanifest world, anti-matter. This is the arrangement for the visible world.
The divine is invisible, there is no polarity in it. All polar opposites are harmonized into oneness in it, all opposites lose their opposition in it.
