This is why a godless person is very restless and anxious, his mind is never at peace. He is full of tension and anguish; life is meaningless for him. It must be so, because without the divine this existence is meaningless. This existence can have meaning only with the divine. If there is no God then everything seems to be meaningless. Then you are just accidental, your birth is just a coincidence. There is no purpose in your existence and you are not going anywhere – you are just wandering aimlessly. And you cannot reach anywhere because then there is no destination, because only God can be the destination. So the person who becomes godless is very tense; he is in a difficulty. Every situation is difficult for him because it is very difficult to live by saying no to everything. Without a yes, there is no foundation to life. No just leaves you in a vacuum. No cannot bring happiness to anyone. No beauty, no bliss, no trust is created in life by denial. No is just a negation. No is the symbol of death, yes is the symbol of life – so the atheist is in a great difficulty.
But one who contemplates rightly will first become godless. Why? – because he will begin to doubt everything that he has been taught. First of all, all his beliefs and faiths will be shattered and only emptiness will be left. When this emptiness happens, understand that you have become free from the society. Contemplation is the method to make you free from the society. Whatsoever was taught to you has been erased; you become like a clean slate, a tabula rasa. Now if there is any meaning in existence, it can reveal itself on this clean slate. Whatsoever was written by others on this slate has been wiped off; now the slate is totally clean.
Godlessness is a very valuable experiment as long as it is not the end. Everyone should go through the fire of godlessness because godlessness cleanses you, shakes off all the dust. It frees you from borrowed knowledge – and it is essential to become free of borrowed knowledge before you can experience your own truth. First you have to get rid of other’s teachings which are not your experience and then the real wisdom will awaken in you. Ignorance and borrowed knowledge, both need to be shaken off. You have read the Gita, the Koran, the Bible and you have heard about Krishna, Mohammed and Jesus. You have filled your mind with all this but you have no experience of your own. It is all borrowed and stale; it is just dead.
If you ask the Christian priests they will say, “Jesus has said this” – but if you ask him what he has to say, then he has nothing of his own to say. He can only repeat the Bible. Is he a man or a machine? If you ask a devotee of the Gita he will say, “Krishna says so.” You should ask him, “What do you say? For what do you exist? Are you Krishna’s gramophone record, ‘His Master’s Voice’?” Then there would be no need for anyone to be born after Krishna; then existence just unnecessarily goes on creating more people.
Remember, there is no repetition in existence. Existence never creates the same person again, there are no carbon copies. Existence is not an ordinary creator – it creates each person as unique. There is no end to its art. Only those whose art reaches to a dead-end will repeat the same thing.
The divine, the energy of this vast existence, creates new waves every moment. It does not repeat a Krishna again. That is why Krishna is not born again nor is Buddha born again. Otherwise, the divine would have thought, “What is the need to create you when great people like Krishna and Buddha have already been created?” Existence would have created assembly lines of Krishnas and Buddhas, just like the rows of cars produced in a factory. But existence does not like to repeat a Krishna, it likes to create you! Certainly it has some purpose in creating you, something is to be fulfilled through you. If you go on imitating Krishna then you are becoming an obstacle in that purpose.
