Flowers will die if they are rubbed on a stone…the stone only tests gold because there is some similarity between the gold and the stone – gold is hard like stone. Have you ever seen gold blooming? It is dead. The dead recognizes the dead. A flower is alive: if you test it on a stone it will die. Only the traces of its death will be left behind, only the blood of the flower will remain on the stone; but there will be no information from the stone about whether the flower was real or false.
The stone that tests gold is a different thing. But if you cannot see the divine in the world, then know that you are like a goldsmith wandering in a garden of flowers with a stone that tests gold. In this way you will never meet the flowers; the stone in your hands is preventing your meeting with the flowers. The way that you see is creating an obstacle. The way that you are is keeping the divine away from you.
When you come and say that you cannot see God, then I don’t try to prove God or tell you that God exists – it would be pointless. It would be like playing a veena in front of the deaf, it would be like burning a lamp in front of the blind, it would be like sprinkling perfume in front of a person whose nose is blocked. No, I don’t make a mistake like this.
When you ask, “Where is God?” then I know you are really asking, “Where is love?” because what else is God but love? You are not saying anything about God, you are saying something about yourself which shows that you don’t have the eyes of love. I wish you had this understanding; then you would not seek God because you would understand it is a wrong search – you would search for love. One who knows love knows the divine. Except for love there is no other God.
Love is even greater than God because there can be no contact with the divine unless your eyes are full of love. Your ears are more important than any great music because without ears music would no longer exist. And I say to you that your eyes are more important than the most beautiful of lamps. The sun is small compared to your eyes. Don’t think in terms of mathematics, otherwise you will think that your eyes are very small and that the sun is very big. And I repeat again that your eyes are vast and the sun is small – because where would the sun be without your eyes? Millions of suns can be seen by your small eyes. And in your small pulse of love the infinity of the divine can be contained.
Your love is vast. The more clearly you understand this fact the more helpful it will be, because if the first step of the journey is taken wrongly then the goal will be lost forever. If the first step is taken rightly then half of the journey is already complete. If you start in the right direction you have already reached halfway; now arriving will not be difficult, it is only a matter of time.
